We present spectroscopy of four cataclysmic variables. Using radial velocity measurements, we find orbital periods Porb for the first time. The stars and their periods are GY Hya, 0.347230(9) d; SDSS J204448-045929, 1.68(1) d; V392 Hya, 0.324952(5) d; and RX J1951.7+3716, 0.492(1) d. 35 Eclipsing binaries presenting unambiguous total eclipses were selected from a subsample of the list of Wyrzykowski et al. (2003). The photometric elements are given for the I curve in DiA photometry, as well as approximate Teff and masses of the components. The interest of these systems is stressed in view of future spectroscopic observations.

We are carrying out a search for Lyα emitting galaxies at z = 6.5 employing slitless spectroscopy at the VLT. In our 43 arcmin field we find three isolated single emission lines with SEDs consistent with line emitting galaxies at z = 6.5.
